How do we handle complaints?

  1. A written complaint form will be taken with details of the suspected violation. A property inspection will take place and notification will be made to the property owner and/or occupant.
  2. If violations exist owner/occupant has ten days to correct the violation.
  3. If violation is not corrected, a ticket (civil infraction citation) may be issued, and the violator will have to appear in court. Fines may be assessed for each day the violation exists.

The Township makes every attempt to work with property owners/occupants to correct violations. We understand that sometimes you may be unaware of Township regulations and/or need additional time to address the issues. However, our intent is to protect the health, safety and welfare of ALL residents; although we are willing to work with our residents, progress must occur and be visible in order to avoid citations being issued. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in this regard.

Noxious Weeds Ordinance Enforcement

Starting on May 1st of every year, all properties located in the Township will be subject to enforcement of the Ira Township Noxious Weeds Ordinance (Ordinance No. 119, as amended). The purpose of this Ordinance is to maintain the character with the development of and landscaping in the neighborhood by removing noxious weeds and any other uncontrolled plant growth, weeds, or grass exceeding ten (10) inches in height.

It is the responsibility of all owners to prevent and/or eliminate noxious weeds before they reach a seed-bearing stage of growth, and/or to cut weeds and tall grass in yards on a routine basis.  Failure to comply with this notice will result in the township taking action by contracting for the services necessary to remedy the violating condition. All expenses incurred to bring this property into compliance shall be paid by the owner(s).  A lien shall be placed against the property, and if not paid, the amount shall be assessed as a special tax against such land on the next assessment roll and will be collected in the next tax cycle.
